CHILDREN WITH AUTISM
Caring for local children and young people with disabilities...supporting the family.
Autism is a life long developmental disability that affects the way a child communicates and relates to the people around them. Children with autism often have a very limited imagination which makes learning to play and learning through play very difficult for them. Children with autism are often easily distracted by sights and sounds that most of us would not notice.
The provision of a distraction free teaching environment that allows focused individual attention is regarded as essential to help children with autism begin to concentrate and learn. The unit provides for this and allows the trained staff to use a number of well regarded teaching approaches e.g. The Picture Exchange Communication Scheme to promote communication and the TEACCH approach that provides structure and meaning to the activities.
